What is RYLA? District 6710’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive 4-Day training program for youth ages 14-15 who are in the 9th grade. Each club, with the help of counselors from their local school systems, nominates talented but economically disadvantaged young people to participate. This event will help these promising young leaders living in District 6710 to learn leadership skills, communication skills, make new friends and HAVE FUN!!
2. Submit a Club Registration Form accompanied by a check for $200 ($175 early bird discount before April 1) to sponsor your club’s candidate to RYLA (Make checks payable to District 6710 RYLA and mailed to Cathy Williamson, RYLA Secretary/Treasurer, PO Box 1599, Elizabethtown, KY 42702);
3. Arrange transportation for the participant to and from the RYLA event (directions will be available). Participants are again asked to arrive at 1:00 p.m. CST on Friday afternoon and should be picked up by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2009.
Does you club want to participate but doesn't have a candidate? Last year we had some clubs who sent us money but did not sponsor a student. That generous gesture enabled us to invite students from other clubs who could not afford their registration fee. If your club would like to do that, we would appreciate your generosity. But please try to find a student. This is such a great opportunity for deserving young people. You also may be interested to know that we have two new Interact Clubs in our district as a result of last year’s RYLA. What a great start!
Criteria for Participants(Click here for a printable criteria list) It is the intent of the District RYLA committee that we serve young people who will not otherwise have an opportunity for leadership training. As a result, the District 6710 RYLA will serve young people who meet the following criteria:
Participants must be freshmen in high school and be 14 or 15 years of age.
Participants should be considered economically disadvantaged. (qualify for reduced or free meals at school)
Participants must have a 2.5 GPA or greater and have a good attendance and discipline record.
Participants should exhibit leadership potential.
Relatives of Rotarians are eligible to participate.
Participants must provide one recommendation from a past or current teacher.
Participants must reside in District 6710 and be sponsored by a Rotary Club in District 6710.
