Information for Rotary Clubs |

Rotary has always been committed to youth, and RYLA is an excellent way for a Rotary Club to invest in the youth of its local community. A young person's life can be changed forever through this experience.
There are multiple ways in which a Rotary Club or individual Rotarians can be involved:
- Clubs can identify and sponsor one or more student participants
- Clubs can financially sponsor a student participant from another club
- Rotarians can volunteer during the RYLA event itself
- Rotarians can volunteer to transport students to and from RYLA

Identifying and Sponsoring a Candidate It
is the intent of the District RYLA committee that we serve young people who
will not otherwise have an opportunity for leadership training. As a result, the District 6710 RYLA will
serve young people who meet the following criteria:
- Participants
must be freshmen in high school and be 14 or 15 years of age.
- Participants
should be considered economically disadvantaged (qualify for reduced or free
meals at school)
- Participants
must have a 2.5 GPA or greater and have a good attendance and discipline record.
- Participants
should exhibit leadership potential.
- Relatives
of Rotarians are eligible to participate.
- Participants
must provide one recommendation from a past or current teacher.
- Participants
must reside in District 6710 and be sponsored by a Rotary Club in District
6710.
To identify candidates, distribute the criteria to Rotarians and ask if they know any students who would meet the qualifications. Also, it is recommended that a Rotarian contact the local high school(s) and speak to the guidance counselor or a teacher. Explain the purpose of RYLA and give them the criteria for candidates. They will very likely be able to recommend several students for the Rotary Club to consider sponsoring.
**If your club is able to identify more qualified candidates than your club is able to sponsor financially, other clubs in the district may be willing to financially sponsor those students. Last
year we had some clubs who sent us money
but did not sponsor a student. That
generous gesture enabled us to invite students from other clubs who
could not
afford their registration fee. If your
club would like to do that, we would appreciate your generosity. But please try to find a student!
Participants Missing School The event is scheduled for the weekend of
September 15-18, 2011 at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center in
Greenville, KY. Participants are asked
to arrive by 5:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday evening and should be picked up by 3:00
p.m. on Sunday afternoon. This will mean
that students will have to get permission to miss school on Friday, September 16, 2011. A letter that explains RYLA for you to send to your
local high school(s) is supplied in the forms section if needed.
Deadlines and Fees Before August 22- $175 per student August 23- September 2 - $200 per student
All applications must be received by September 2, 2011. There is no limit to the number of applicants from each club.
Volunteer Opportunities Good adult supervision is needed for this program to be effective. If there is someone in your club interested
in the opportunity to work with some great young people as well as other great
Rotarians and Rotaractors, please encourage them to volunteer for an all
expenses paid holiday weekend in beautiful downtown Greenville. It is a lot of fun! Interested volunteers should contact Kay Sharon.
